What is a VoIP switch?

A switch (or network switch) is a piece of hardware that connects multiple devices within the same physical network. In the case of VoIP technology, the switch will connect the router to the computers and any IP phones.

It is essential to have a VoIP switch when a large number of devices are connected to a VoIP phone system, since routers generally have only a limited number of Ethernet ports. The switch can also serve to create several VLANs (virtual local area networks). For example, having one VLAN for VoIP and another for data will optimize network bandwidth, make it easier to handle data flows and improve call quality.
